Hi, I’m Mathew.

🕺🏽 I make/perform/teach dance… and a few other things… I eat…

Improvisation | Gloucester New Arts Festival, MA.

And, I have been in the business of the arts for 15+ years as an arts entrepreneur, curator, producer, community organizer, organizational leader and business strategy consultant for various organizations.

Needless to say, I love my work! And, I won’t bother you with the full details… but feel free to check out this summary resume if you’re curious.

Otherwise, here’s the important stuff… 👇🏼

I was born & raised in good ol’ Bellingham, Washington. One of the most beautiful places in the States! And, I started dancing when I was in high school… though I discovered my capacity as a performer far sooner than that when I entered into the world of local, children’s theater.

In 2003, I moved to Baltimore, MD to work on my BA in Dance (w/ a concentration in choreography & performance) from Goucher College. While in college, I started dancing with ClancyWorks Dance Company and stepped into the world of Arts Administration. And, in my senior year, I won the ACDFA National Award for “Best Performance” at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. 🏆

Co-founders Mathew & Emma, Left Side Labs.

After graduating in 2007, I moved to NYC to dance for 4 years with Nicholas Leichter Dance. Started an internship with Movement Research and eventually secured a role as the Marketing & Media Manager for Dancing In the Streets. Did a few side projects with various artists, including Jennifer Monson, Wendell Cooper, Clyde Forth Visual Theater, and ClancyWorks. And, eventually focused solely on creating & self-producing my own work through Left Side Labs, co-founded with long-time friend/collaborator, Emma Batman.

After 10 years in the big apple, my husband and I relocated to Old Town Alexandria, VA. But before we left the city, I grabbed my certification in “Awareness Through Movement®” from The Feldenkrais Institute…. oh, and became the board president of a chamber of commerce, the CEO of an accounting firm, and was recognized as a “20 Under 40” Superstar by CPA Practice Advisor… but that’s a much longer story!!! 💅🏽

Nonetheless, throughout my career I’ve had many great opportunities to make/perform/teach dance, including: performances with various artists at The Joyce, Joe’s Pub, PS122, City Center, The Ailey Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, the Center for Performance Research, Triskelion, and D.C.’s Dance Place.

Collaboration | Bridge & Olive Dance, NYC.

And, I’ve shared my own work at the Baltimore Theater Project, Cabaret Cataplexy, Queer Art Impact’s ‘Come As You Are’ Festival and Gay Wars, various evenings at Dixon Place, The Tank, and Arts On Site, the New Dance Alliance’s ‘Performance Mix Festival,’ the Gloucester New Arts Festival and the Transmodern Festival. I was also honored as an artist in residence for the acclaimed Djerassi Resident Artist Program.

Finally, as an arts educator, I’ve been on faculty at the Goucher Summer Arts Institute and Experimental Movement Concepts, was a resident artist for the Trinity College LaMaMa Summer Arts program, and taught workshops for various colleges, high schools and private performing arts institutions throughout the DC/Maryland area.

So, those are just a few of the highlights! 💪🏼

And, if you’re curious to learn more about my non-dance background, I invite you to check out my LinkedIn profile. And, since we’re on the topic, I tweet, post a few things on IG, and even (still) use Facebook…. though we’ll have to be friends first.

Much Love & Gratitude,

Mathew Patrick Heggem
